Nearly 75 braces were created to help hold the posts and beams together

A modern chain mortiser made life easier as mortises in the 19th century would have been hand drilled and chiseled.

Les attending to the farm’s lychee harvest. A bumper crop in 2003!

Daryl Thronas (third from left) of Kapaa, Kauai built the foundation with his crew.

Left to right: Devin, Scott, Glen and Les joining the bents weighing several tons before the day of the raising.

Completed assembly and ready to stand.

Without hitch the six bent system was erected in one day!

Scott lowering a crane strap and preparing for the next bent raising. I should add that after nearly every day of work in the hot Hawaii sun Scott found the time to pursue one of his other passions in life. Cycling. He rode nearly 30 miles every evening including tackling the 4000 foot Kokee mountain on his Sunday’s off from building!

The six sets of rafters with purlins comprised the main roof system.

In one day the rafters were raised and set on top of the frame.

While the building went on Kaaren Drent took care of coffee orders, meals and even dewormed the sheep.

As a tradition in New England a pine bow was always nailed to the peak of the roof on the day of the raising. Left to right: Scott, Gigi, Kaaren and Sue.

Chris and Scott working on the metal roof. No easy task on this 8-12 pitch. One local roofer showed up and said no way I’m going up there!

Scott at the end of his stay. Timber frame and roof roof completed on the barn at Blair Estate.

From Kauai, Gray Maclellan and Ed Farris picked up the ropes and continued with the finishing of the barn.

Helping for two weeks were friends Kim Brown (left) of Waterbury, Vermont and Peter Inglis of Telluride, Colorado
